New Storage Cabinets, Fall Clean-up & Preparing October's Outing...

Jennifer and I left for camp this past Friday directly after work.  My boss was kind enough to allow me to depart over an hour early which made our arrival at camp that much quicker.  We set up camp and sat down in front of a great campfire well before sundown.  The chill in the air told the familiar story of fall with the changing colors of leaves confirming the end of summer.  It was a beautiful time at camp.  I find it way more enjoyable when the bugs and heat are almost nonexistent. This weekend was one of the best three days of weather that I've experienced in a long time.  We both turned in early.  Saturday was going to be a day filled with hours of fall clean-up, weed trimming, and lawn cutting.  4 tanks of fuel through the weed wacker and some minor aches and pains confirmed that I was getting camp in tip top shape.  One lap with the push mower around the perimeter and then it was off to the races on camp's new MTD lawn tractor.  Wow, it is so much easier scaling the property riding the mower rather than pushing it!

After finishing up the yard work, I concentrated on installing two new cabinets in the shed mahal.  I swapped the tops, burnt the old one and installed the butcher block from another.  They offer a slightly better organized storage alternative in a smaller footprint.  Plus, they're lockable and have adjustable shelves.  After completing that job, I set up the outdoor shower and got cleaned up.

Jennifer and I headed into town, visited a couple small shops and picked up a dinner.  My buddy Greg gave me a call and told me he had arrived at camp and was enjoying the fire.  We had a roaring fire, scarfed down pizza and laughed several hours away with friendly conversation.  Before you know it, the clock clicked past midnight and we all called it a night.  Sunday morning we left camp around 10, stopped to have breakfast on the way home and said our farewells.  In a few more weeks, the guys are going to assemble at camp once again.  This time for prime rib, clams, and three days of confirming we refuse to grow up.  The next report will report the details of that outing.

Late March Visit...

Jim and I ventured up to camp this past Friday evening.  We arrived there early enough to unload a couple hand-me-over tables and the custom storage cabinet I built at work.  The snow was a few inches deep and because of the melt off, slushiness and mud underneath I parked in the high end of camp and didn't attempt pulling up directly in front of the camper.  Its on the low side of the mountain and the ground tends to want to swallow up tires in a tan/orange slurry of clay muck.  We didn't want to get stuck!  Been there, done that!

The new cabinet was a definite improvement offering better organization, more storage capacity and because of the way I offset the bottom, more leg room for whoever sleeps on the bed it sits beside.

After things were unloaded, Jim and I headed to a local pub a short drive over into a neighboring town and I was treated to a very nice fish dinner.  As you can see from the photo, it was more than just a few beer battered walleye strips, but also had shrimp, mini freshwater lobster tails and home made 7 cheese macaroni.  It was scrumptious!  Thanks Jim!

When we returned to camp, Jim made an excellent fire with the old storage unit from the camper as the base for the logs.  As it burned down, so did our energy levels.  We headed to sleep stuffed and exhausted...even slept in until 9AM the next morning!

A Fun Filled Holiday Weekend

The family and I arrived Friday evening and stayed through Sunday morning.  A sketchy forecast unfortunately was enough for Floatman and his family to choose not to make the trek this time.  Friday night was the usual beautiful crisp and cool evening filled with stars, satellites and shooting stars.  A camp party at the peak of the mountain was in full swing with a pack of rowdy bachelorettes.   At half past midnight, the music, talking, wailing laughter and fun times came to an instantaneous and abrupt silence.  Someone hit the power switch and the party was officially, all at once, over...180 proof moonshine can do that to a group.  LOL!

Saturday morning I made my way 30 minutes out from camp.  Three mountains and a couple streams later and I arrived at my favorite go-to fishing spot.  With the temperatures warming up and the water flowing at a more appropriate level...I wondered what my night crawlers might lure to my line?  Following the current past several boulders the size of VW bugs and into the depths of pools filled with woody debris I was richly rewarded.  Twelve rainbow trout, 3 rock bass and two small mouth later...I called it a good morning (now a warm and sunny afternoon) and headed back to rejoin the family.

Later that evening, the Gricars showed up and we ventured to one of our favorite re-opened and under new ownership taverns only to find it hot, humid and slow to serve.  We were disappointed, but at the same time realized that with every new business opportunity, working the bugs out is part of the labor of love.  The remodel inside is a definite upgrade to the old look.  Once they get the kitchen dialed in and the AC dialed down, I believe the place will be everything it once was and more.

We got back to camp after visiting another tavern and eating way to much food around 11:30-ish and by midnight I was passed out in the zero gravity chair snoring away.  We had high hopes of enjoying ourselves around the firelight, but that never happened!

Promptly, I'm told, at 12:30...the rains rolled in and did their thing all night long.  We woke to a steady sprinkle, packed up camp in the rain and headed out.  Once we traveled and hour north of camp, the weather switch to sunny and dry!

Here's some photos to balance the endless narrative:
